Opponent’s options: X plays using b14, row 1 plays hooking TWAE
Candidate plays: HOISE/HORSE m9 (45), OI j2 (18), HI j2 (27), HO 14b (22), KOI 15h (7)
Potential plays on next turn: H plays on row 14 after KOI
Subgoal: Maximize your chances of preserving your lead
Resolution: The key in this position is to effectively neutralize the T hook at 1h. While there is no way to block it, you can limit its effect by playing HEROIC. While it allows plays like COBALT, these plays do not score enough to win.
Many players immediately make a play like HORSE 13m, trying to outrun the T hook. While it does outrun most T plays, extremely high scoring plays and bingos can win in row 1. The same holds true for the KOI setup: you can’t outrun enough of your opponent’s plays with this pool. HEROIC is a better option.
