Sometimes you need to wait until you make a fishing or setup play. Here, you should not play a setup. While playing VID gives you a chance to draw ANCONAL or CANAKIN/CANTINA, your prospects improve if you wait until next turn to play a setup. Although you need a bingo to win, you have enough time so you can wait a few turns in to try to hit your bingo. Your opponent might be unable to score, in which case you can make a scoring play such as NOVA g1.
You can delay the VID setup by playing CAN o1. CAN is better than VAN since it allows you to make the VID-AVID setup next turn, when you have better chances of playing a bingo. It also saves the V for 3g, and blocks the best scoring spot on the board. Amateurs often make openings like VID because they are in a rush to get back in the game and tend to be impatient: they don’t have a thorough idea how to catch up. When opening the board, it is important to remember you can always open the board later. If you have a good setup such as VID/AVID or a good play that opens up multiple lines, you can always wait to make that play until you have a good leave to capitalize on the opening you have created.
