In this position, there are many ways to almost win, but the only winning play is aR 3j (1), setting up the V.  (You can also play LI first, but you have to play aR later.)  This allows you to ditch the V and trap your opponent with both Rs, allowing you to play VAR, LI, and EME after they play AW.
