Score: 299-354
Pool: AGHHILNORTV
Opponent’s options: Bingos or high scores on row 3
Candidate plays: YOKED 3c (36), DYKED 3c (38), PAWKY 11a (34), PAWED 11a (22), GOOKY e9 (26)
Potential plays on next turn: HIKED (after PAWED)
Subgoal: Create potential for a high scoring combination of plays (this turn and next turn) either by bingoing or scoring that can overtake your opponent.
Resolution: In Puzzle 25, you have little hope of ever drawing a bingo. Playing DYKED or YOKED would normally be a reasonable option, hoping that your opponent has a bad rack, but these plays are exceptionally poor because you are still behind, you’re creating a new scoring spot for them, and you are emptying the bag.
However, by playing PAWED 11a (22), you give yourself a good chance to win by either drawing two vowels (making it hard for your opponent to score) or drawing the H, allowing you to play HIKED d8 (60) next turn if your opponent does not block. This play combination, if unblocked, could be enough to win the game.
