Puzzle 44 features a rare out in three endgame where your goal is to prohibit your opponent from going out in two while continuing to score on all three plays. This means that you have to block either FERN or RIN and threaten to use the other play for big points. In this case, the best play is OIL b13 (12), blocking RIN and threatening SAREE to go out next turn in case your opponent plays FERN. This will incite a different play that won’t allow your opponent to go out in two. In response, you can play TEE h12 next turn, going out with RAS at i2 (or k1 as a backup).
